Services offered for birds and exotic animals

Preventive Medicine

  • Exam after purchase or adoption and periodic physical examinations;
  • advice about conditions of captivity for exotic species. Many diseases of these animals are, in part, related to their environment. For example, inadequate food or ambient temperature, lack of humidity, parasitic contamination of the terrarium, or vitamin deficiency may contribute to the failing health of an exotic pet.
  • Screening for aviary diseases (Avian Chlamydophilosis, Psittacine Beak and Feather disease, Polyomavirus, Pacheco disease, etc) and bird DNA sexing blood test. Chlamydophila psittaci, formerly known as Chlamydia Psittaci, as well as being a contagious bacteria for birds is also a zoonotic illness (disease that is transmissable between animals and humans). The disease resulting from C. Psittaci infection in human is called Psittacosis.
  • Complete blood tests;
  • testing/prevention/treatment of internal parasites (intestinal) and external (fleas, skin mites, ear mites, lice, etc., depending on the species);
  • vaccination against Distemper and Rabies for ferrets;
  • implantation of a microchip (birds of medium and large size) – see dog and cat section;
  • beak trimming with a Dremel and trimming of flight feathers;
  • nail trimming (all species);
  • removal of leg bands (may become too tight, particularly in the case of canaries).
