Jack and Bella

Are you considering adopting a pet? Would you prefer a dog, a cat, a rabbit or perhaps a more exotic species?  It is essential to consider the decision carefully and to research the breed or type of pet that interests you. This exercise will help determine the implications of an adoption, will inform you about your choice, and will hopefully prevent the abandonment of a pet to an already overburdened rescue network.

The following are some of the questions you should consider. How much time do you spend at work? What other obligations or activities are you involved in? What kind of environment can you offer this new addition? A house in the country or a 5th floor apartment? A spacious yard or a sidewalk in the city? Is there a park close by where dogs are allowed? What will you do if you have to travel for work or vacation?

It is important to know that the 10 pound puppy sleeping soundly behind the window at the pet store could become a muscular 70 pound ball of energy that requires a daily 5 kilometer run, even during the freezing temperatures of winter. Similarly, a petite Chihuahua may not be the best choice for a family that enjoys cross-country skiing and wants to bring the dog along.

Sports enthusiasts will want to consider an equally enthusiastic breed of dog for their outings. For example, the German Pointer and the Vizsla are excellent for skijoring (Cross country skiing in which the dog tows the skier). Other breeds of dog are great companions while jogging, biking, or snowshoeing. For those who are accustomed to a more relaxed lifestyle, a more sedentary breed of dog or a cat is ideal for curling up with a good book by the fire.  It is interesting to note that there exists a wide variety of breeds of cat, each with their own distinct personality.

The presence of children in the house is another very important component in choosing a pet. Rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs and chinchillas are great choices since they are gentle, easily handled, and less demanding than a dog. It is important to be informed about the specific peculiarities of these ‘pocket pets’. For instance, rabbits and guinea pigs require fresh vegetables daily in their diets. Since ferrets have a tendency to bite and reptiles could be carriers of salmonellose, they are not recommended for young children, but may be ideal pets for well-informed adults.

The majority of reptiles have the advantage of being quiet, hypo-allergenic and require low maintenance (depending on the size and species). However, maintaining their good health hinges directly on the quality of their diet and the conditions of their captivity. Temperature, lighting, specific diet requirements are all extremely important elements. The equipment these pets require can be costly. The list may include a heating lamp, UVB lighting, a spacious terrarium, adequate bedding, humidifiers, or an aquarium with proper filtration and a heater.

Birds are another popular pet choice. Canaries, budgies, cockatiels, love birds, and monk parakeets are some of the more popular species for beginners. Parrots of medium or large size are also popular, but are more of a challenge and require an experienced handler. These large birds (African Grey, Amazon, Cockatoo, Macaw, Eclectus) require more space and lots of interaction as they are active and intelligent. Without adequate stimulation and exercise, they often become depressed and unhealthy.

It is important to consider the inherent costs of caring for a companion animal. Your budget should include proper nutrition, visits to the veterinarian, and possibly insurance plans.  How about the longevity of the chosen pet? A cat can live up to 22 years whereas a hamster may live only about 2-3 years.

The right choice of a family pet can offer years of enjoyment and unconditional love. Why not consult one of our veterinarians while making your choice? Who better to guide you in making an informed decision than a medical professional with vast experience in animal care. Rather than a burden of responsibility, with the guidance and ongoing veterinary care, your pet can continue to enrich your life for as long as possible.
